Blackberry Dumplings (Gullah Home Cooking) From A Killer Cookbook #3: Holiday Recipes to Accompany The Reporter Who Died Probing

The Blackberries

1 quart blackberries 1 pint water 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon butter 1 tablespoon vanilla Boil the blackberries, water, sugar, and butter until the berries are tender. Add the vanilla and turn off the heat while preparing the dumplings.

The Dumplings

1¼ cups flour 1½ teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 egg, beaten ¼ to ½ cup milk 1½ teaspoons melted butter Sift together the dry ingredients. Stir in the egg and add enough milk to make a stiff batter. Stir in the melted butter. Bring the berry mixture to a boil, and drop the batter by teaspoons into the berries. Boil the dumplings for about 5 minutes or until they are puffy and light. Serve the dumplings with the berry sauce poured over top. Add a dollop of whipped cream or a large tablespoon of vanilla ice cream, if desired.
